Our dear friend Florence has passed away. We have been privileged to know this gentleman for the last few years. He passed away peacefully on Monday in the company of his family.
Florence was a very humble and modest man who made a huge contribution to our school over the last number of years. He popped in one day to say hello to Trish and was “captured” by Miss Rooney to talk to her class! From there on he became a Ballyroan Boy! Amazing trips to Kilmainham Jail, Áras an Úachtaráin and Dáil Éireann ensued. He always made himself available for Grandparents Day and for many other events at the school.
Florence was a tech wizard! His regular e-mails were eagerly awaited. Packed with historical facts, local information and riddles they were a joy to receive. He was genuinely surprised and chuffed to be the national winner of the AGE ACTION Silver Surfer award in May, which the school nominated him for on the basis of his wonderful blog grandadonline.com He received a huge boost and kick out of winning his award. Indeed it kept him going for another few months. He loved the photos that were taken on the day and was very proud to be on the cover of their magazine this Summer too. The boys responded by writing good old fashioned letters back to him which he truly treasured.
We are very grateful for the unique relationship we had with Florence and feel so priveleged to have known him.
To his family Dermot, Vivienne, Geraldine, & Deirdre we extend our deepest sympathy.
