District Inspector’s Observation Book

The following are selected comments taken from the Inspectors’ Reports following visits to the Old School (1842 to 1967)

October 1873  “An assistant is required here.  No one teacher can be expected to instruct 80 pupils in all branches of the programme”.

September 1880  “I hope that the floor will be scoured occasionally with hot water, soap and washing soda.  Mere sweeping with a whalenone brush does not remove dirt”

January 1881  “Rolls 123.  Present 60.  Weather severe.

September 1882  “State of classes much lower than I have ever known it.  I Hope I find a general improvement when I next visit.  This room was built for an attendance of about 50 boys but the number has since doubled.  A classroom is, therefore, urgently required.”
