World Book Week
We had a truly fantastic week this week celebrating all things literary! We started off each morning with a poem or an extract from a book which exposed us to lots of new authors, poets and ways of writing.
Each day we also did D.E.A.R. time which stands for Drop Everything And Read! It meant that after lunch, a bell would ring and the whole school would silently read for a whole 20 minutes!! Wow – the school has never been so quiet!!
Each class was also paired with another class to do ‘paired reading’ and this was a huge success. First class read with fourth class, second class read with fifth class and third class read with sixth class. It gave everyone a chance to have their reading listened to and was a lovely experience for all involved.
Even the hall came alive this week because each class created a display based on a novel or a piece of literature that they have covered. There were displays based on the books; ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘Fantastic Mr.Fox’, ‘Private Peaceful’, ‘Matilda’ and ‘We believe in Unicorns’. There were also book reviews and art up on the walls!
The displays in the hall set the scene for the main event on Thursday which was actually World Book Day. Everybody was asked to dress up as their favourite character from a book and we all went to the hall and had a parade. Prizes were given but it was so hard to judge the best costumes because everyone went to such amazing efforts to look like their favourite characters! There were; Gangsta Grannies, Fantastic Mr. Foxes, Cats in Hats, Artemis Fowls, Gandalfs and Where’s Wallies to name but a few!! Even though prizes were only offered to a few, nobody went home empty handed because everybody got their very own book to take home with them that day!! The books had been left over from the Student Council book drive a couple of weeks ago.
Don’t forget to use your book tokens that were given out at the start of the week and best of luck to anybody who entered the short story competition…….winners to be announced soon……
